ভীষণ রকমের ঝাঁকুনি দিয়ে গাড়ি আপনা আপনি থেমে গেল। ড্রাইভারের আসন থেকে দ্রুত নেমে দেখি সামনেই একটা রাজহাঁস শুয়ে গড়াগড়ি যাচ্ছে। এমন ফাঁকা রাস্তায় আমার চোখ এড়িয়ে কোথা থেকে হাঁসটি এলো? আর কী ভাবেই বা গাড়িটি হঠাৎ থেমে গেল? আমি তো ব্রেক চাপিনি! আশ্চর্য ব্যপার তো! সে যাই হোক, ওসব তত্ত্ব-তালাস পরে করলেও চলবে। আগে হাঁসটার খবর নেই। রাস্তার উপরে হাঁটু গেড়ে বসে ওর গায়ে হাত বোলালাম। থ্যাংস গড, সে বেঁচে আছে! হাঁসটার মাথা, গলা, ডানা, পা, পেট, ঠোঁট সব জায়গায় আলতো করে নেড়েচেড়ে দেখছি। কতটা চোট পেয়েছে তা বোঝার চেষ্টা করছি।
ভয়ার্ত চোখে হাঁসটা আমার দিকে পিটপিট করে দেখছে। আমি তার রক্ষক, নাকি ভক্ষক; বোধ হয় সেই দোটানায় আছে। যেন বলছে, কেমন ড্রাইভার গো তুমি? আমাকে তো প্রায় মেরেই ফেলেছিলে! কক্ষণো না, হাঁসটি’র অমন অভিযোগ কিছুতেই সত্য না। ড্রাইভিংয়ে কোন অমনোযোগ ছিল না। আমি নতুন চালক না, আর বেপরোয়া ড্রাইভারও না। গত ২৮ বছরে লক্ষ লক্ষ মাইল গাড়ি চালিয়েছি। আমার ড্রাইভিং রেকর্ড ক্রিস্টাল ক্লিন। হাঁসটাই বরং ট্রাফিক নিয়মকে বুড়ো আঙুল দেখিয়ে গাড়ির সামনে আছড়ে পড়েছে। কেন বাপু, আমার সাথে সহমরণে তোমার কী এমন দরকার পড়েছে? আমি কী তোমার নাগর লাগি?
পিচ ঢালা এই পথটা ঘন বনরাজির মধ্য দিয়ে এঁকেবেঁকে ‘সলং বে’র জলরাশিতে গিয়ে ঠেকেছে। সেখানেই আমাদের গন্তব্য। লেক হুরণে’র নৈসর্গিক সৌন্দর্যের পুরোটাই যেন ওই ছোট্ট ‘সলং বে’ হরণ করে বসে আছে। লেকের এপারে কানাডা, ওপারে আমেরিকার মিসিগান রাজ্য। মাঝে বিস্তীর্ণ জলরাশি। লেকটা এতটাই বিশাল যে, প্রথম দেখায় ওটাকে কেউ সমুদ্র ভেবে ভুল করতে পারে। এক আঁকিয়ে বন্ধুর ‘সলং বে’ যাওয়ার বায়না মেটাতেই টরন্টো থেকে ২৫০ কিলোমিটার পথ পাড়ি দিয়ে এসেছি। ওখানকার প্রাকৃতিক দৃশ্যের মোহনীয় শোভা সে তুলির আচড়ে ক্যানভাসে তুলবে। আমি বেচারা তাঁর মাগনা ড্রাইভার, আর গুণমুগ্ধ সঙ্গী। সে যদি ভাল একটা ল্যান্ডস্কেপ আঁকতে পারে, তাতেই আমার দিনের মজুরি উসুল হবে।
রাস্তার যেখানটায় আমরা হাঁস-সংকটে পড়েছি, সেখান থেকে আমাদের গন্তব্য ১০ কিলোমিটারের কমই হবে। এই জায়গাটা থেকে সামনে-পিছে, ডানে-বায়ে ৫/৭ কিলোমিটার জুড়ে শুধু জঙ্গল আর জঙ্গল। কোনো জনবসতি বা দোকানপাট নেই। ঘন পাইন গাছের ডালে ডালে পাখির কিচির মিচির আর বাতাসের শব্দই শুধু শোনা যায়। আমাদের গাড়িটা ছাড়া গত আধাঘণ্টায় আর একটা গাড়িরও দেখা পাইনি। হেঁটে চলা মানুষ তো এখানটায় কল্পনারও অতীত। কানাডা যে পাতলা জন বসতির দেশ, এসব এলাকায় এলে তা হাড়ে হাড়ে বোঝা যায়। তো জঙ্গলাকীর্ণ সেই পথের স্পীড লিমিট মেনেই আমার গাড়িটা চলছিল।
পাশের সিটে বসে সঙ্গী সারাক্ষণ কানের কাছে এক নাগাড়ে ঘন কথা
বলছিলো। যেন মশা বসেছে কাঁধে, ভ্যান ভ্যান করছে। কিন্তু সে সব কথামালার কোনটাই না ছিল প্রেমময়, না দরকারি। তাঁর বক-বকানিগুলো মোটেই আমার মনোযোগ পায়নি। মন ছিল ড্রাইভিংয়ে, আর চোখ ছিল রাস্তায়। কিন্তু তারপরেও কিছু বুঝে ওঠার আগেই এই হাঁসটা কোনো এক গুপ্ত সুড়ঙ্গ দিয়ে যেন আমার গাড়ির সামনে এসে আছড়ে পড়লো। আর সাথে সাথেই গায়েবী কোন এক শক্তি যেন ব্রেক কষে গাড়িটি থামিয়ে দিলো। না, আমি গাড়ি থামাই নি। আমি তো হাঁসটাকে দেখিই নি, গাড়ি থামাবার প্রশ্ন তো আসেই না!
হাঁসটার স্বাভাবিক নড়াচড়া দেখে মনে হলো আঘাত পেলেও তা মারাত্বক না। ওর দুই ডানার ভেতর দিয়ে দু-হাতের আঙ্গুল ঢুকিয়ে শরীরের পালকে বিলি কেটে দিচ্ছিলাম। কঠিন হৃদয়ের কোনো মানবীও এমন “বিলি কাটা” পেলে, তরল হয়ে ঢলে পড়তো। কিন্তু ওই হাঁসটির যেন তা পছন্দ হচ্ছিল না। সে ডানা ঝাপটে আমার হাত দুখানি সরিয়ে দেবার চেষ্টা করছে। এটা একটা বড়সড় রাজহাঁস, এ দেশী নাম ‘কানাডিয়ান গুচ’। এই গুচদের পালক দিয়ে শীতের দেশ কানাডায় অভিজাত শ্রেণীর গরম কাপড় তৈরি হয়। দুএক মিনিট বাদেই হাঁসটা দুপায়ে ভর করে দাঁড়িয়ে কক কক শব্দে কাকে যেন ডাকলো। চেয়ে দেখি, ওর ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে আরেকটি গুচ ৮টি ছোট্ট বাচ্চা সাথে নিয়ে রাস্তার কিনারা থেকে দুলতে দুলতে হেঁটে ওর সাথে মিলিত হলো।
আমার বন্ধুটি ততক্ষণে গাড়ি থেকে নেমে রাস্তায় পা ছড়িয়ে বসেছেন। হাঁসের বাচ্চাগুলো ওকে ঘিরে ধরেছে। সে পরম মমতায় ছানাগুলোকে পটেটো চিপস্ খাওয়াতে লাগলো। ছোটবড় মিলিয়ে ১০টা হাঁস, আর আমরা দুজন। রাস্তার দুপাশের সবুজ বৃক্ষরাজি এতটাই সুনসান, যেন মনে হয় স্রষ্টা জগতসংসারে ১৩তম কোন প্রাণী সৃষ্টিই করেননি। ছানাগুলোর কোনটা মা হাঁসের পেটের নিচে ঢুকছে আর বেরুচ্ছে, কোনটা বা বাবা হাঁসের পিঠে চড়ছে। বড় হাঁসদুটোর মধ্যে কোনটা যে গাড়ির সামনে আছড়ে পড়েছিলো তা নিয়ে আমাদের মধ্যে তর্ক বেঁধে গেল। আমি বলছি এটা। আর সে বলছে, আরে না না, ওইটা। এই তর্ক-বিতর্কের মধ্যেই সঙ্গী বলে উঠলো,
— সাজ্জাদ তুমি হাঁসদের পুরো ব্যপারটা বুঝতে পেরেছো তো?
— কিসের কথা বলছো, বলতো?
— হাঁসেরা ছানাগুলোকে নিয়ে রাস্তা পার হবে, এমন সময় আমাদের গাড়ি এসে পড়েছে। ছানাগুলোর জীবন বিপন্ন চিন্তা করে মা হাঁসটি গাড়ীর সামনে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে পড়ে থামানোর চেষ্টা নিয়েছে। দেখেছো, সন্তানের প্রতি মায়ের টান কাকে বলে!
— ঘটনা তাই নাকি? তুমি শিওর?
— হাঁ দেখ না, একটি রাজহাঁস আমাদের গাড়ি থামালো। এরপর বাকিগুলো নিরাপদে এসে রাস্তায় জড়ো হলো। এ ঘটনা কিছুতেই কাকতালীয় না, একেবারে well planned.
তা হবে, অবস্থাদৃষ্টে তাই তো মনে হয়। এই বনাঞ্চল ওদের জন্য অভয়ারণ্য। গাড়িঘোড়া দেখে তো ওরা অভ্যস্ত না। তাহলে মানতেই হবে যে, হাঁসদেরও চিন্তাশক্তি আছে! মনে মনে ভাবছি, তুচ্ছ প্রাণী রাজহাঁস, তারও সন্তানের প্রতি কি দায়িত্ববোধ, কেমন নাড়ির টান! নিজে মরবে তবু ছানাদের গাঁয়ে আঁচড় লাগতে দেবে না। এই জায়গাটাতে মানব-মাতা আর হাঁস-মাতায় কোন তফাৎ নেই।
হর্নের শব্দে আমার সম্বিত ফিরলো। চেয়ে দেখি শ’খানেক ফুট দুরে প্রভিন্সিয়াল পুলিশের গাড়ি দাঁড়িয়ে। আমাকে রাস্তার মাঝখান থেকে গাড়ি সরাতে বলছে। দ্রুত হেঁটে পুলিশের কাছে গিয়ে বললাম, এক ঝাঁক গুচ রাস্তা ব্লক করে রেখেছে। ওরা না সরলে আমার সামনে যাবার উপায় নেই। একটা গুচ হয়তো আঘাতও পেয়ে থাকতে পারে, আমি শিওর না। গুচের আঘাত পাওয়ার কথা শুনে পুলিশ দুজন তড়িৎ গাড়ি থেকে বেরিয়ে প্রায় দৌঁড়ে ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছালো। আমার বন্ধুটা তখনও ছানাগুলোকে আলুর চিপস খাওয়াচ্ছে।
পুলিশ দুজন রাস্তার উপরে জাবড়ে বসে হাঁসগুলোকে আগলে ধরলো। প্রাথমিক আদর আহ্লাদ শেষ করে একজন অফিসার জানতে চাইলো, গুচে’রা কতক্ষণ আপনাদের রাস্তা আটকে রেখেছে? আর গাড়ির সাথে কোনোটার ধাক্কা লেগেছে কি? কথা বলার সুযোগ পেয়ে আমার বন্ধুটা একেবারে যেন বাক-বাকুম করে উঠলো। ২/৩ মিনিটের মধ্যে পুলিশের কাছে পুরো ঘটনা উগরে দিলো। আমার ড্রাইভিং লাইসেন্সখানা দখলে নিয়ে অফিসার দুজন গাড়ির চারপাশটা খুঁটে খুঁটে দেখছিলো। এক পর্যায়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করলো,
— আপনি গুচটা’র কতটা দূরে গাড়ি থামাতে পেরেছিলেন?
— তা ৪/৫ ফুট ফাঁক ছিলো বলেই তো মনে হয়। তবে আমি গাড়ি থামাইনি। কী ভাবে থেমেছে জানি না।
— আপনি থামাননি বলছেন? দেখি গাড়ির চাবিটা?
— গাড়ি খোলা আছে, আপনি যান।
অফিসার ড্রাইভিং সিটে বসে ড্যাস বোর্ড পরীক্ষা নীরিক্ষা করে জানালো, গাড়ির সেন্সর গুচটি’র উপস্থিতি টের পেয়ে তৎক্ষণাৎ অটো-ব্রেক এপ্লাই করে গাড়িকে থামিয়ে দিয়েছিলো। আরে ব্বাস্! গাড়ির স্বয়ংক্রিয় ব্রেকের কথা আমি শুনেছি বটে, আজই প্রথম তার কার্যকারিতা দেখলাম। আর আমার এই গাড়িটিতে যে এই ফিচারটা আছে, তাতো আমার জানাই ছিলো না!
ইতিমধ্যে বেলা ১০টা বেজেছে। অফিসারদের বললাম,
— গুচগুলোকে রাস্তা থেকে সরিয়ে নিন। আমাদের যেতে হবে, তাড়া আছে।
— বিনয়ী ভঙ্গিতে পুলিশ-সুন্দরী বললেন, মি: আলী বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণ দপ্তরে খবর পাঠিয়েছি। ঘন্টখানেক বা তার আগেই ওরা এসে পৌঁছুবে। গুচগুলো সব সুস্থ আছে কিনা, সেটা নিশ্চিত হওয়া দরকার। সে পর্যন্ত আপনাদের এখানেই অপেক্ষা করতে হবে। অবশ্য আমরাও থাকছি আপনাদের সাথে।
— তার মানে কী? ধরে নেই গুচদের মধ্যে কোনো একটি অসুস্থ। তো সেজন্য আমরা এখানে থেকে কি করবো? আমরা কেউ তো প্রাণী-চিকিৎসক নই?
— কিছু মনে করবেন না মি: আলী, আপনার গাড়ির সাথে কোন গুচের ধাক্কা লেগেছে কিনা, এবং সে গুরুতর আঘাত পেয়েছে কিনা, বিশেষজ্ঞরা সেটা খতিয়ে দেখবে। আঘাতের জটিলতা বুঝে আপনার বিরুদ্ধে মামলা করতে হতে পারে। আমাদের গাড়ির ফ্লাক্সে কফি বানানো আছে, চলুন ওদিকে। পান করতে করতেই ওরা চলে আসবে। বেশিক্ষণ লাগবে না।
হাঁস নিয়ে এই আদিখ্যেতা দেখে রাগে গা জ্বলে যাচ্ছে। বন্ধুর মুখখানা বেজার! বললো,
— এখানে তো ফেঁসে গেলাম, আরো অনেক সময় লাগবে মনে হয়। ছবি আঁকার কাজটা মনে হয় আজ আর শেষ করতে পারবো না।
— পারবে পারবে, বেলা ১২টা ১টার মধ্যে যদি কাজে বসতে পারো, তাহলে রাত ৯টা অব্দি তো দিনের আলো পাচ্ছ। আর না হয় একটু তাড়াতাড়ি করে তুলি চালাবে!
— ক্ষেপে গিয়ে বললো, একি গাড়ি চালানো যে ১০০’র জায়গায় ১৫০ কিলোমিটার বেগে হেকে দিলাম! যা বোঝ না তা নিয়ে জ্ঞান দিও না তো।
অ্যাম্বুলেন্সের মতো দেখতে বিশাল একখানা গাড়ি ইমার্জেন্সি বাতি জ্বালিয়ে আমাদের গাড়ির পেছনে এসে দাঁড়ালো। ডাক্তার-নার্সদের মতো পোষাক পরিহিত দুজন প্রত্যেকটি হাঁসকে অনেকক্ষণ ধরে পরীক্ষা করলো। ওদের ডানা ছড়িয়ে ধরে, পালক উচিয়ে, চিৎ করে শোয়ায়ে, ঠোঁট ফাঁক করে, গলা নেড়েচেড়ে, কত্ত রকমের যে নিরীক্ষা! আমরা দুজন নীরবে দাঁড়িয়ে এসব কাণ্ডকীর্তি দেখছিলাম। শেষে বিশাল একটা খাঁচায় হাঁসগুলোকে পুরে অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে তুলে নিয়ে বিদায় হলো।
পুলিশ অফিসারদের একজন আমার সঙ্গীকে ওদের গাড়ীর কাছে ডেকে নিয়ে গেল। আরেকজন আমাকে বললো,
— আপনারা এবার যেতে পারেন। কোনো হাঁসেরই আঘাত লাগেনি। তবে ওরা ভয় পেয়েছে। ৭ দিন ওদের নার্সিং হোমে রাখলেই ঠিক হয়ে যাবে। আর খুবই দু:খিত মি: আলী, আপনার সঙ্গিনীকে ১০০ ডলার জরিমানা করতে হবে। সেটা তিনি ১ মাসের মধ্যে পরিশোধ করতে পারবেন। আবার চাইলে কোর্টে গিয়ে চ্যালেঞ্জ করতেও পারেন।
খুব বিরক্ত হয়ে বললাম,
— কেন, তাঁর অপরাধটা কী?
— তিনি বেবী গুচগুলোকে অস্বাস্থ্যকর খাবার খাইছেন।
পোড়া কপাল আমার। হাঁস নিয়ে ওদের হড়বড়ি এতক্ষণে আমার সহ্যের সীমা ছাড়ালো। কিন্তু এটা তো আইনের দেশ, নিয়ম ভাঙ্গার শাস্তি তো পেতেই হবে। হাতে একখানা হলুদ রংয়ের নোটিস নিয়ে আমাদের আঁকিয়ে গাড়ির কাছে ফিরে এসে বললো,
— আজ আর ছবি আঁকা আসবে না। চলো জায়গাটা ঘুরে দেখে যাই। কাল/পরশু আবার নিয়ে আসবে। আর টরন্টো ফিরে আমাকে কোন একটা ইন্ডিয়ান রেস্টুরেন্টে হাঁসের মাংস দিয়ে ডিনার করাবে।
— সে হবেক্ষণ, এবার গাড়ীতে ওঠো তো। আলুর চিপসগুলো সোহাগ করে হাঁসদের খাওয়ালে। যদি আমার গালে ২/১ টুকরো তুলে দিতে তাহলে কি তোমার আঙ্গুলে ফোস্কা পড়তো? হাঁস হয়ে জন্মানোই ভাল ছিলো! তাহলে যত্ন ও সুরক্ষার অভাব থাকতো না!
